Valve appeals Left 4 Dead 2 ‘ban’, edited version on standby
Australia recently refused to classify Left 4 Dead 2, effectively banning it. Now Valve’s Gabe Newell has appealed and handed over an edited version as backup.
The Valve boss confirmed in a Sydney press conference that the developer will be appealing against the Australian Classification board’s refusal to classify the game.
Valve earlier said that it was “pretty bummed” at the decision, if not a little surprised. “I thought Left 4 Dead 2 would get the same treatment as Left 4 Dead 1,” said Newell. “So I was a little surprised,” he said in a press conference in Sydney.
An edited version “fully compliant with the guidelines” has also been submitted as a backup should the appeal fail. But the Valve boss would rather it doesn’t come to that. “Our goal is not to ship this second version,” he told the press.
“We think Left 4 Dead 2 is a lot of fun,” said Newell. “It’s a game for adults. But we’re aware that different countries have different restrictions, and we want to make the choices that make the game the most fun for that country.”
