Eight ways Project Natal could change footy games forever
Pro Evolution Soccer boss Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka recently revealed that future PES games will tout Project Natal skills to get gamers pulling off stepovers like Cristiano Ronaldo on hot coals.
Join us as we ponder how Microsoft’s motion tech will revolutionize console footy right here. Join us for some transfer gossip style speculation with a few of our suggestions on how Project Natal could change future footy titles.
Bend it like Becks
We imagine that Project Natal would be more suited to set-pieces than running about the pitch.
It’s perfect for free kicks. With Natal’s ultra sensitive camera players will have more options to try out clever set-piece routines or go for goal.
Do you go for a Roberto Carlos style hit and hope or a curling Becks special? The only downside is that rubbish players aren’t likely to get much joy. Better brush up on those skills.
Hand of God
New methods of play means new ways to get the upper hand on your opponent, literally.
Natal’s ability to detect ones entire body leaves plenty opportunity to net a cheeky Maradonna style handball on the ref’s blindside. It might sound devious now but imagine how peeved off you’ll feel on the end of God’s hand.
Take pens like the Germans
Extra time is up and the scores are deadlocked. Rather than hide a controller under your shirt its time to limber up and put those pennos away for real. There’s no blaming dodgy joypads this time. Just don’t play anyone from Germany.
On me ‘ead son
Up to now heading hasn’t been a massive part of the game in the way it should be. Where it used to be a case of hitting shoot as soon as the ball comes in your proximity skilled Natal players will now time their mini leap just at the right moment to leap above bamboozled centre halves. That is, if you can be bothered.
That’s a dive, ref!
No longer will defenders be able to think they can barge you off the ball in the penalty box.
With the ability to con the ref defenders will approach you with all the caution of facing an incoming Argie winger. Likewise as a defender do you keep your distance or will you have the patience to time that last ditch tackle to perfection?
New ways to rub it in
Microsoft’s new motion tech is a cause for celebration in more ways than one with new ways to milk the crowds appreciation of your goal-scoring prowess thanks to full boy motion tracking. Just don’t attempt any Klinsman dives in your front room.
Throw it like a relegation battler
The humble throw-in routine will be given a new lease of life. We can imagine the camera angle swerving into an over-the-shoulder type view for Stoke FC style launches into the oppo’s penalty area. It might be route one stuff but for some it could be the only route to grabbing that injury time clincher.
Sweeper keeper
While diving around the living room making Peter Schmeichel style saves might be a little tricky in most living rooms the ability to get a little more involved in goal kicks and throws will add that extra dimension to any game.
Imagine being able to see through the eyes of a keeper after smothering a corner to set your side up for a quick counter. Quick thinking could make all the difference between lording it up or a last minute loss.

Interesting ideas, Stephen.
I’ll just add that Shingo Takatsuka, creator of Pro Evolution Soccer series, said they are “aggressively” working to implement Natal technology into future games of the series:
