Infinity Ward defends ditching of dedicated servers

Infinity Ward defends decision to ditch dedicated serversInfinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has defended the developer’s decision to introduce new matchmaking system IWNET over dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2 PC on his blog.

The news that Modern Warfare 2 PC won’t have dedicated servers has left a sour taste in gamers pallets, with a petition calling against IWNET.

On his official blog, Fourzerotwo Bowling explains what it’ll mean for the game and why he thinks it offers a worthy alternative.

Following comments he made on a recent webcast Bowling first of all reiterated plans to introduce IWNET.

“…that would allow matchmaking for multiplayer games on PC. The news, by default, means no more browsing through a Server List for a server with the settings / ping you want among other things,” he blogged.

It might not have pleased MW2 PC players but Bowling has defended IWNET saying that the game is “the biggest investment Infinity Ward has ever made into the PC version of our games.”

He went on:

“It’s also the most feature-rich PC version we’ve ever made. IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allows them to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, while removing the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain a server on their own.”

How will it offer the benefits of dedicated servers? In four ways. Bowling posted.

The first is matchmaking & smoother gameplay. In the past players had to scroll through a server browser to find the best quality game based on PING, each with their own rules and ways of playing the game.

“With IWNET matchmaking, it takes all that into account for you,” Bowling explained. “All you have to do is select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) that fits the style of play you are in the mood for.”

Secondly players will can play using playlists for pre-set game modes and private or clan matches with another team with specific rules.

The third point Bowling said is that the PC version will now make it easier for players to party up with their buddies or clan. It’ll have a friend list to see when players friends are online and let the party move from game to game as a group.

Apparently the biggest benefit of IWNET will be that players won’t have to fear playing amongst cheaters or rely on the server admin to constantly police it. Valve-Anti-Cheat “keep games clean of hackers and cheaters,” Bowling posted.

“All in all, IWNET adds a load of new features that the PC version of our games have never had before and allows us an infrastructure to continue to update and improve on the game post-launch.”
