Sony: PS3 to blame for lack of PSP games
Despite being just over five years old the PSP’s only recently getting the injection of quality games its fans have desired. It’s all the PS3’s fault says Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida.
When the PSP came out in 2004 there was high hopes for what could be achieved on the gaming front for Sony’s first foray into handheld territory given the success of both the PSOne and PS2.
But since then the games library has been relatively bare of must-haves until now. With the likes of LittleBigPlanet, Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny, Tekken 6 and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars coming or having just launched on the PSP things are looking better for the handheld.
PSP owners haven’t always had it so good, mind. The PS3 arrived one year late, putting the PSP on the backburner.
“A couple of years ago we clearly put too much focus on PS3 titles and that caused a lack of support for the PSP last year. Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told Gamasutra. “So we need to be focused and gear a lot of our resources back to the PSP, and we have many titles this year”, he added.
He also reassured PSP owners that despite the ack of Tokyo Game Show announcements there’s more to come.
“We are continuing to support the PSP. We didn’t announce new titles at [Tokyo Game Show 2009], but in the near future we’ll have some announcements.”
