Sony: Industry needs new experiences to survive
Sony VP Michael Denny believes that the creation of new gaming experiences is essential if the games industry is to survive.
The games industry has lived long enough on repeat franchises but unless developers start to create new intellectual property it’ll stagnate and suffer, Denny said during a talk at Develop Liverpool.
Speaking about whether the industry can afford or should make the effort to make new IP the Sony man was in no doubt as to the solution.
“For me the answer is clear, simply, we must support new IP creation to survive as an industry. Consumers crave new things. If we want to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive marketplace, we have to continue to produce new experiences.”
He talked up the credentials of Sony’s own IP, name-dropping Heavy Rain as a prime example of new gaming experiences.
“New IP is truly the lifeblood of the industry and Sony’s commitment to producing new IP will continue”, Denny said.
“We believe we have a promising line up of exclusive new IPs for the year ahead and one that is particularly special to me and reflects a growth of emotional connection and story-telling, is Heavy Rain.”
It’s a game that’s so far divided many, with some gamers unsure whether it really is a game or an interactive film.
Whatever ones opinion it’s clear that its developer, Quantic Dreams is willing try out new ideas. And that’s the sort of thinking that’ll keep the industry alive says Denny.
