School offers Wii Fit lessons to PE dodgers

School offers Wii Fit lessons to PE dodgersA school in Kent is getting children who don’t want to do PE lessons to get fit playing games on the Wii instead.

Children from Northfleet Technology College in Kent who deliberately leave their kit at home will instead get fit via virtual exerciser Wii Fit.

It’s part of the school’s plan to encourage exercise-phobics to indulge in physical activity by putting them on six week “Wii courses,” but only if the students promise to spend some of their PE lessons outside participating in more traditional exercise.

PE teacher Aaron Brown, said of the classes: “They are great to use as a carrot on a stick to get lads disaffected with PE back into enjoying exercise.

“We have been picking out the youngsters who deliberately leave their kit at home  -  the ones who are trying to get out of it.”

The lessons are also being used to give children with disabilities to the chance to keep active without doing anything too strenuous.

Others have criticised the schools approach.

Nick Seaton, of the Campaign for Real Education pressure group, said that it displays a lack of discipline on the school’s part.

“This smacks of poor discipline  -  the school seems to be pandering to the whims of those who are lazy. The teachers should ensure that their pupils are using their abilities. There’s nothing better than competitive sports for stretching achievement.

Games have been proven to be just as worthwhile as physical activity. Back in July a study showed that gaming activities like Wii Bowling, boxing and Dance Dance Revolution burned just as many calories as intense walking sessions.

The school might want to check out the Cyberbike, a full-size exercise bike complete with its own games especially built for the Wii.
