Nintendo 3DS announcement forced by press leak

Submitted by Stephen Ebert on March 30, 2010 – 10:24 pmOne Comment

Nintendo’s recent announcement of its new 3D-enabled handset – the 3DS shocked everyone. According to a report Nintendo’s hand may have been forced by the press.

Rumours of a new Nintendo handheld are nothing new. Most recently it was said to feature power similar to that of the GameCube, with tilt functions as standard.

But as the silence on Nintendo’s side continued it soon became clear that Nintendo was saving any reveal till E3. Or so that might have been the plan, if not for intruding Japanese press types.

According to a CNBC report Nintendo had no choice but to reluctantly announce the 3DS via a short press release in order to prevent of PSPgo or PS3 Slim-sized proportions.

“Apparently, the Japanese press was all over it and talked with suppliers there and Nintendo just wanted to get out ahead by breaking the news to prevent a leak,” research analyst Billy Pigeon told CNBC.

Unfortunately for Nintendo it came at a bad time. What with the Nintendo DSi XL having recently been released in Europe and the U.S, despite being available in Japan since November 2009.

Who knows, Nintendo’s approach could hasten more early announcements in future. New hardware is leaked all the time. Even in prototype form, most recently both the PlayStation Move and Project Natal were outed in some form before finally being revealed.

Did the 3DS announcement give you second thoughts about purchasing a DSi XL? Let us know.
