Sony demonstrates PS3 motion controller
Sony’s jumped on the motion control bandwagon with its own movement sensitive device to work with PS3 Eye. And it looked looked really impressive.
Sony wouldn’t have been blamed for getting nervous in the build up the the demo, given that Microsoft showed off it’s motion sensing camera yesterday, but Sony has shown that it too can mix it with the casual audience.
When Sony brought out the stick with a glowing orb on top even we were thinking about cringing, but when demonstrated it was clear Sony wasn’t messing around.
It offers true 1:1 style controls looking just as responsive as anything Nintendo or Microsoft had to offer.
The controller was able to substitute the remote on screen and substitute it with virtual objects such as a baseball bat, ball and chain or a gun, with no lag whichever object was used.
It was also used on stage to paint and draw graffiti, handling delicate hand movements exceptionally well.
Most impressive was when Sony demonstrated the concept technology to control a sword-wielding character. Hitting a baddie at its legs caused it to buckle realistically, while hitting it on itsĀ head caused it to get knocked out as if it were real.
An archery demo also showed off the motion controls to a tee, with every exact movment recreated on-screen with unnerving accuracy.
If the Project Natal motion sensing camera from Microsoft didn’t give Nintendo food for thought then Sony’s own motion sensing remote certainly would have.
One thing’s for sure. It looks like motion controls are here to stay.
