PS3 VidZone music video service now live
Parents worried about their children having their eyes glued to MTV and video games will now have just one medium to moan about after music video vault VidZone landed on PS3.
VidZone, the much touted music video service for the PlayStation 3 has finally gone live and we’ve just given it a whirl.
Just as promised its packed full of enough music videos to get the neighbours in an ear popping frenzy. Users can find music from almost any popular artist they can name.
Upon entering the service users will be greeted by a homepage with a range of featured playlists from selected artists. We decided to let loose with some of Eminem’s greatest hits before checking out the best music video cameos playlist kicking off with Everlong by Foo Fighters.
Viewing videos is easy. Just click on the video icon and it’ll start playing in a small screen, just press select to get it full sized, well sorta. It’s nearly full sized with black borders around it. Viewers can also rewind, pause and fast forward music vids.
If you’re after something more select you can search alphabetically by artist or genre. There should be enough for even the most musically fussy with choices from alternative, Bollywood, classical, hip-hop, pop, world music and more.
PS3 users can also hop into the featured section where you can check out the latest releases, browse the UK chart or create your own thanks to the playlist function.
Can’t be bothered to make your own playlist. Then hit the recommended playlists. Choose from ’90’s’, ‘Hard Rock’, ‘Music Divas’ or get in the mood for some rare British sunshine with ‘Summer Hits’.
VidZone is available free from the PlayStation Store in UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Australia. According to Sony the service launches with over 10,000 music videos from 4,000 major artists. Though we didn’t count them all.
Sony’s promising that the music video library will be regularly updated, with “some very exciting things planned over the coming weeks and months.”

I don’t know if there are options to change, but full screen on mine is actually a square in the middle with black bars left and right. I would have preferred a wide screen, full screen option.
Apart from that, the system is fluid, easy to use, and quick. Advertising is ‘lite’ at the moment, but the cynical side of me expects a lot more intrusive adverts further down the line once we have all downloaded the application. (The minute any music videos start with 30 second adverts and I am so uninstalling this!)
For the time being…. great stuff.
You’re right there is a bit of a border going on. I tried it out on a large TV so the picture seemed pretty big. Not sure how it looks on smaller sets. I’ve since amended the article. That’s what happens when you type in a frenzy
It’s a good service though. It’ll be interesting to see how often it gets updated.
