Miyamoto on motion control: You need a controller
When Microsoft unveiled Project Natal the company said you don’t need to know how to play games, just “life experience,” but Nintendo’s Miyamoto reckons you still need a controller.
Microsoft’s Project Natal motion sensor camera was largely well received. But like many others Nintendo game designer and creator Shigeru Miyamoto isn’t entirely convinced that ditching controllers altogether is the way to go, saying that players need a physical object to hold.
“Looking at what the other companies have shown here at E3, it feels like they have finally obtained the very basic technology for doing motion control, but… I don’t think I could create an experience that truly feels interactive if you don’t have something to hold in your hand, if you don’t have something like force feedback that you can feel from the controller.”
It’s an interesting viewpoint and one that will have many nodding in agreement. It seems Sony would also agree with the Nintendo man, having gone with a pair of motion controller gamers can move about, with buttons.
Such things haven’t concerned Microsoft though, with the company saying the luanch of Natal will be as big as the launch of the Xbox 360 itself.
