Infinity Ward mocks Call of Duty subscription rumours
Earlier rumours suggested that Call of Duty fans would have to cough up the cash for extra online services. Infinity Ward has slammed them saying that multiplayer will always be free.
The recently discovered survey suggested that gamers would be required to subscribe for a service offering new features, modes and early access to Map Packs.
Thankfully there will be no such thing after Call of Duty developer infinity Ward posted a message on its forum denying it has anything to do with them.
“This rumor has absolutely nothing to do with Infinity Ward or our games, including Modern Warfare 2. We would never introduce such a system for Modern Warfare 2 so don’t worry.
“Multiplayer will always be equal and free for everyone as always.”

…unless it’s on the xbox.
haha, my thoughts exactly Chester. xbox ppl don’t realize that they are the only method of gaming where they must pay to play a feature that’s built in to most games. PC doesn’t pay a fee, other consoles don’t pay a fee. yet you do. and that’s exactly what the live subscription is for, playing a free feature online/screwing ppl over.
even though it’s a small fee, it’s still ridiculous. PC game infrastructure uses sales from the games themselves to provide that service, why cant xbox live. i’m sure MS gets a pretty big cut to have games on their system.
@Chester – You still don’t pay to play MW2. You pay to have a Xbox Live Gold account, with access to tons of things – amongst others online activities.
@Hans
i agree with you as well Hans, but do you feel that you should have to play a built in feature of games? something others don’t?
why doesn’t microsoft allow everyone online play, or do they worry that they won’t get the money out of you, because the main reason you pay is so you can play online. the other stuff is just there to make it seem like you get more.
Do you feel the cost is worth it for xbox live if it wasn’t required to play online? would you still buy the service, i bet 70% of the xbox live uses wouldn’t if it wasn’t required for online play.
lol
@Hell-Reaver
Do you have any idea why they charge you to play online? It costs Microsoft a boatload of money to run the servers that allow you to play online. Do a little research on google and you will understand why your paying to access these servers.
@Chester and all PS3ers
Get a job, it’s $50 a year. Not expensive at all. By the way, Xbox LIVE offers a ridiculously amount of stuff that you can’t get on PSN or PC. XBL is definitely worth the $50; there are so many more gamers on Xbox 360 than PS3.
[...] The Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack was only out over the weekend and already its topped one million [...]
*yawn @ xbox live haters*..
if you wanna play it for free you have three options
- play it on pc
- play it on ps3
- play it on xbox using xbconnect – http://www.xbconnect.com/
let me recap,that’s THREE options, so please stop whining
@ chaos,
to be fair, the multiplayer games themselves don’t run on servers. they’re peer-to-peer. They run on the xboxes of the gamers playing the game.
Of course, there are a lot of other servers that are required for xbox live to work, to deal with authentication, communication, marketplace, etc. I still agree with you though, xbl is a small price to pay for the best multiplayer console service at the moment.
@ Hell-Reaver, I would like to know the same thing, would XBOX users continue to pay the fee if online gaming was offered for free without the gold membership!
@ Chaos, PS3 has to run servers as well, yet they dont make their customers pay a fee to play online. PSN features are not as good as XBL, ill give you that, but the fact is that both consoles must run servers. One makes you pay extra, and one doesnt.
@ Panic, I, as well as many other PS3 users, have a job. And XBL doenst offer a ridiculously amount of useful stuff in comparison to the PS3, it just offers a ridiculously amount of stuff that I would never use.
I own both systems, but I never shell out my money to pay to play online for a gold membership, because I find none of the other things that XBL has to offer worth the $50/year. So I use the PS3 and buy PS3 games.
@PS3 User, what features would the Xbox live gold offer then if online was free?
@ Stevey101, my point exactly, they would have nothing to offer if online was free. That is why I say PS3 and PSN are the better options, because they are free for online play. If XBOX offered onine play for free, I believe no one would ever upgrade to a Gold account. So as Hell-Reaver was saying, XBOX is basically scandling money out of their customers by requiring a fee to play online. Yes I know they offer more features than PSN, but the primary reason that XBOX users pay for the gold account is for online play. This is free with PSN
@lol
lol
It’s funny how people are slamming xbox because you have to pay to play live, but yet isn’t that why we have the best servers etc?
Whereas the crappy PS3 servers lagg all the time, you can’t connect to people most the time etc..
I know I’d rather pay to have a GOOD service then get the crappy free version.
It’s like picking strew shoes over leather shoes because the strew shoes are free.
And since most of your are bias gamers, sorry i shouldn’t have catorigized you as gamers… Since I doubt any of you actually compete on any gaming websites such as gamebattles.com , consolegaming.eu , decerto-esports.eu
Of course your going to side with PS3, I myself do have both. Ps3 console (THE CONSOLE) is better than xbox 360 however xbox 360 is superior to Ps3’s online.
Look on any offical gaming website, a great choice would be http://www.gamebattles.com and check the figures out yourself. You will see how superior xbox 360 online games are compared to Ps3.
So, If you’re a campaign kind of person get the Ps3. If you prefer playing online get xbox 360.
Call of Duty 4, old game yet still one of the most played as it is the best game out (still). xbox has hundred of thousands of online users playing it all the time, what does Ps3 have? a couple of ten thousands…

@Ps3 owners,
Yes The PS3 is free to play mp on and isnt on xbl, but there’s significant differnce between the two.
One is that the PS3 servers are horrible I’m always lagging and getting kicked which is not suppose to happen when your playing mp online.(and NO I don’t have shity internet it is very good and fast)
And when I play on my xbox I never have this problem ever, sorry it is what it is.
And the other thing is I just feel that ms is more organized and has more to offer then psn.
So yes I’d rather play mp on my 360 then PS3 and would pay $50 a year for ever if I had to, I mean comon how cheap are you to complain about $50 when you’ve bought a $500-$600 machine over one that cost $200!?!? It cracks me up.
@ JImmyDeanMcarthy, what you said is not entirely true. I rarely experience lag on my PS3 or get kicked, and this is beside the point. Neither PSN nor XBL has any control over lag in online MP, in Peer-to-Peer networks, such as you see in COD titles, the connection strength depends entirely upon the host. If the host has a bad connection, then you do, end of story on either console. For example, my friend has the same ISP as I do with the same download/upload speed, and I have played on his XBOX and he has played on my PS3, we both experience lag at times due to poor host connection. Nothing to do with PSN or XBL.
The prices you mentioned are the highest for PS3 and the lowest for XBOX. The more accurate median prices are – PS3 80g is $400, and XBOX pro 60g is $300. Lets do the math – PS3 yr1 = $400, XBOX yr1 = $350;–; PS3 yr2 = $400, XBOX yr2 = $400;–; PS3 yr3 = $400, XBOX yr3 = $450…..and so forth. The point is that PS3 continues to cost me $400 while XBOX cost rises by $50/year.
You can crack up at what you like, but I am cracking up that you are paying year after year for what I am getting free. Its okay if you like throwing your money down the XBOX virtual toilet, you are free to do with your money as you wish. Just as you are free to like which console you like. As I said before, I own both systems, but I do not pay $50/year to play online when I can pay $0/forever to play online. The XBOX is getting used for single player and split-screen play and the PS3 is getting used for online play in my house, becasue the online experience is the same in my view and it is free on PSN.
Oh yeah, and dont even get me started on the fact that PS3 has a built in Blu-Ray player. The only reason PS3 gets dogged on so much is becasue it released later than the XBOX 360. People got used to the XBOX 360, and Sony payed for it. But in my opinion PS3 will always be the better value.
Hey 402, please give the pc community CODTV. Treyarch just implemented it into their cod:world at war game so we all know its possible now.
@ PS3 User, I just wanted to point out that xbox doesn’t cost $450. The Elite cost is $399, Pro is $299, and Core is $199. Say what you want about Blue-Ray, Blue-Ray can be horrible depending on the Blue-Ray player. A $300-$400 Blue-Ray player is going to look better then say, a $150 Blue-Ray player. Now, with that in mind, what kind of value does (or doesn’t) a $400 PS3 Blue-Ray player have. In my opinion, to keep costs as low as possible to have Sony stay in a price range close to that of it’s competitors, I’d say it has a $50 Blue-Ray player in it. Sony isn’t going to give you a gaming console and a decent Blue-Ray player. I guess the $50 I pay to have all my useless live content such as music videos, XBLA games, DLC, oh and a great online MP (ie. no damn hackers [to back me here is youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IUPhXpbmzk ]) IF xbox ever becomes this easy to hack, I’ll never play a fps again, atleast not online mp. The modded controllers annoy me too. If you can’t play the damn game WITHOUT help from hacks, mods, or friends, then you aren’t very good at the game then. Another ie. -> Today I was online and a person shot at me with an MP5 UAV Jammer set up, most of it missed me but a couple shots from a pistol would have finished the job, this is what I was waiting for. But instead I see him pull out his pistol and fire a whole clip at me in a very short time, as in, it is not humanly possible to pump your finger that fast unless you have a robotic finger. Now a robotic finger, aka modded controler, is what I would call throwing money down the toilet.
all of you shut up.
just play whatever gaming console you want.
personally i prefer the 360.
but if you want the ps3 then play it, no one’s stopping you.
