Microsoft launching Spotify-like music service this month
Microsoft is planning to launch a music steaming service simlar to Spotify to let music fans stream music for free, as well as download and own. It could even come to Xbox 360.
Speaking to The Telegraph Peter Bale, executive producer of MSN said: “Music is an important area for Microsoft. We are looking at launching a music streaming service imminently.
“It will be a similar principle to Spotify but we are still examining how the business model will work.”
Spotify users can steam music for free but have to listen to a minute of advertising every half hour, though users can opt to pay £9.99 to turn off the ads. Microsoft’s music service will operate on pretty much the same principle, with a paid for and free version.
Without going into specifics Bale hinted that the service could even head to the Xbox 360 to. It would seem a natural step given that PS3 users are currently able to view streaming music videos thanks to VidZone.
