Pachter predicts Apple TV games console for 2012
Gaming’s own Mystic Meg, Michael Pachter believes Apple has a deliberate strategy which will see the company turn Apple TV into a games console within the next few years.
Speaking to IndustryGamers analyst Michael Pachter believes Apple’s biding its time by seeing it can do with the iPod Touch and iPhone before the company makes the move into consoles.
And when they do “Apple TV is the device that they can turn into a console, and they have essentially the same goals as Microsoft–to turn Apple TV into an entertainment and Internet hub,” he said.
According to Pachter any plans Apple may have for a console rest upon the success of the App Store and consumers continuing hunger for more apps. Earlier today it was revealed that over 1.5 billion apps have already been downloaded.
“If they can get enough iPod users to download games, it’s a natural that they can ultimately convince a large number of these users to buy a game-enabled Apple TV. I’d guess a 2012 or 2013 launch.”
But the likes of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo needn’t immediately worry, as initial games will be similar to those already found on the App Store than full-scale games like Gears of War.
Those type of titles, says Pachter will only be possible once Apple has purchased a few developers. Then Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo can be concerned, although as Pachter implies Apple would be totally satisfied if existing iPod and iPod Touch owners purchase the game-toting Apple TV.
“We’d get cool stuff like World of Goo or Geometry Wars, but probably not super cool stuff like Gears of War until they bought a few developers. Again, it’s the Apple audience they’re after, and they would be perfectly happy if everyone who owned an iPod or iPhone bought Apple TV.”
