Video: New Xbox 360 ads invade dashboard

Submitted by Stephen Ebert on July 20, 2009 – 3:15 pm6 Comments

Video: New Xbox 360 ads invade dashboardEarlier this month Microsoft revealed it was planning to place adverts on the Xbox 360 dashboard, promising they won’t interfere. They’ve now started appearing. Gamers won’t be happy.

Gamers were rightly concerned of the prospect of their Xbox 360 console turning into a giant billboard. But evidence of the new ads placing video adverts in the faces of Xbox 360 owners will do little to quell such fears.

A YouTube clip (spotted by Kotaku) shows one such example of how Microsoft will place video ads within the dashboards other features.

Judging by the video it looks like users can thankfully skip past them but with the prospect of more ads gamers will be none-too-pleased at having to continually do so.

Some gamers (including us) have yet to encounter the ads, so only time will tell how intrusive (or not) the ads are.

At the beginning of the month Microsoft said that the new Silverlight ads will “not interfere with the gaming experience.”

A post on Major Nelson also added “I need to let you know that you don’t need to worry about a huge influx of ads across the dashboard.”

At the time Microsoft said one of its core principles is to “enhance, not interfere with the gaming experience,” but if the ads aren’t even game related they could cause a stir for paid-for Gold subscribers especially.

PAYING FOR A SERVICE THAT GIVES YOU ADS?

FUCK YOU MICROSOFT I HOPE THE RECESSION EATS YOU ALIVE

  • wesker says:

well, the minute I turn on my xbox and see an advertisement then I am canceling my subscription and modding my 360.

It is disgusting that you pay for something (that is free for playstation users) and then get ads thrown in your face. I have stopped watching tv because of ads and now I will stop playing 360 online because of ads.

Ill just return to online PC gaming.

Paying for service with ads? That sucks and will cause me to reconsider renewing my seldom used gold account. But at $50/year it is cheaper than cable, which also has ads. Then again, cable is being obsoleted by netflix and bittorrent so my gold subscription may not survive after all.

Now, if I could get multiplayer gold benefits for free, I wouldn’t mind the ads so much, right?

  • Kevin says:

I do not intend to resubscribe to xbox gold if they are going to use ads. That is crap.
