Microsoft using LittleBigPlanet music in Xbox 360 ad

Submitted by Matt Jackson on August 6, 2009 – 12:30 pm8 Comments

Microsoft using LittleBigPlanet music in Xbox 360 adThe Xbox 360 and PS3 has a tendency to create civil war amongst fans of each. So quite why Microsoft decided to use the LittleBigPlanet theme for its latest ad is a mystery.

The “Get Connected” ad, designed to bring attention to the joys of Xbox Live is causing quite a stir for different reasons.

Just five seconds in and there’s no mistaking LittleBigPlanet’s catchy theme.

The song might not be exclusive to LBP (it’s called “Get It Together by a British band called The Go! Team) but the decision to use a song so heavily associated with one of the PS3’s most recognisable franchises will raise more than a few eyebrows.

That is a very weird decision by M$. It would be like Sony using the HALO intro song in one of their ads.

    Very bad taste M$.

But M$ is know for stuff like this. They used to have an ad of boy playing video games. He was holding a SONY Playstation Controller and not the XBox controller.

  • Carl says:

It’s good music and it goes well with the ad. And that track was out way before lbp was so why not ? It’s not like Sony employed someone to create it for the game.

  • DrFeeeman says:

@carl: it’s like someone in school who sits on a chair, had it recognized in their name and then when they leave to go to the toilet someone else takes their seat. No ones saying it’s illegal, but you are gonna get frowned upon by A LOT of people doing it.

Microsoft clearly recognized this is a hit when linked to casual gamers, so by advertising in this way and using the music so loved by many (arguably because of LBP) they’re trying to capitalize on it and THAT is very dirty play.

  • Chuck says:

    @DrFreeman
The only people who would recognize it are PS3 owners who’ve played LBP.. How many casual players do you think that amounts too? Is it really something that MS would try to capitalize on? (insert laughter here)

The problem is that the people who made this commercial never played LBP… wait who’s kidding who.. the people who made this commercial probably never played video games period…

  • PS3FanBoy365 says:

This is so not cool. They are using LittleBigPlanet’s theme song. Microsoft proebly sneaked there way into this. Microsoft sucks for doing this.

  • Steve says:

    Who cares?
I heard this track before i’d seen LBP and i associate it with the band that plays it not the game or ad that uses it.

For those who believe that this or any other song belongs to the game or ad that uses it, you are doing a great disservice to the artists who created the original score and being kinda childish in the process.

  • JustAGuy says:

Okay….I understand there are those out there who have never played LBP, or even own a PS3. What about the ones who have???

@Chuck that is the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. Why would Microsoft hire non-gamers to make a gamer-related video??? That’s just ridiculous! It’s called MARKETING! Microsoft is clearly trying to strike a chord with PS3 owners, and myself being the owner of both consoles, well I can’t help but admit, they struck a chord with me.

Yeah the music came out before LBP, but because of LBP, the music now has probably about 80% more listeners. Not to say there weren’t a lot before, but you need to admit it….LBP is half known for their soundtrack….and this track is one of the main tracks that emphasizes the fun factor of LBP (only reason I know, I bought the game of the year edition 2 weeks ago). Microsoft is treading on unowned waters….and they may regret it come the end of this year!

  • I think the decision was quite weird. But they know what they are actually doing so let them be.
