Croupiers: Training underway at the Casino de Blotzheim
Land-based casinos are accustomed to recruiting dealers on a regular basis to host games at their tables dedicated to traditional gambling.
Sometimes, they choose beginners who are then trained in-house.
This is precisely the option chosen by the Casino Barrière de Blotzheim in Alsace.
For the past 12 weeks or so, the Casino has been welcoming 11 apprentice croupiers who are here to learn the rudiments of this exciting profession, during a training course lasting around 3 months.

When you enter a special room at the Casino Barrière de Blotzheim during the day, you can hear the traditional announcements: “Place your bets”, “Les jeux sont faits” and “Rien ne va plus”. Yet these phrases are usually uttered in the evening.
This is because the gaming complex is currently hosting a training course. Delivered by the renowned Cerus Casino Academy, 11 people will learn all the tricks of the croupier trade.
On completion of the course, the Casino Barrière de Blotzheim will offer positions to some of the graduates. Others will also be hired by the group’s 2 other gaming establishments in Alsace, namely the Casino Barrière de Niederbronn in Bas-Rhin on the one hand, and the Casino Barrière de Ribeauvillé in Haut-Rhin on the other.
Hands-on training at the Casino Barrière de Blotzheim
In today’s news, the course focuses on 3 of the most popular games in French land-based casinos today: roulette, blackjack and poker.
Most of the student croupiers are recent graduates who are retraining or looking for an additional income. Sarah Tschann, for example, is a sculptor. She’s looking for a better way to earn a living, while continuing her art.
The strength of this training is that it is based entirely on practice, at the Casino Barrière in Blotzheim.
This immersion is an added bonus, enabling students to be fully prepared for the job at the end of the 3 months. By working in a real gaming establishment, aspiring croupiers can feel the atmosphere of the casino, and work with the same equipment they’ll have to handle later on.
This is an undeniable advantage over other training courses that take place in more conventional classrooms.
It has to be said that being a croupier is an extremely demanding profession. To do it properly, you need to be good at mental arithmetic and have excellent concentration.
You also need to have the right technical skills, but above all you need to be able to assert yourself at the table while remaining discreet. It is this delicate balance, among other things, that is instilled in apprentice croupiers during training.
