Strike at Loto-Québec casinos
State-owned Loto-Québec currently operates 4 land-based casinos in la belle province: in Montreal, Gatineau, Charlevoix and Mont-Tremblant.
Nearly 1,700 disgruntled employees went on strike on Thursday, June 15.
They didn’t choose a date at random. This weekend is the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix, held on the artificial island of Notre Dame, not far from the Casino de Montréal.
A pay rise to combat inflation
The 1,700 Loto-Québec casino employees on strike all belong to the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux, better known by its acronym CSN. A few days ago, they adopted a 5-day strike mandate, to be used at the appropriate time.
Many experts expected the strike to coincide with the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix. The aim of the strike is to obtain the wage increase demanded in vain to combat inflation.
On Thursday, June 8, Loto-Québec published excellent results for its 2022-2023 fiscal year, which stands out as the best for the casino and gaming sector in the history of the state-owned company.
In particular, this enabled the executive vice-president (Kevin G. Taylor) to obtain a handsome 34% increase in his salary, from C$375,461 to C$504,498.
Now the group’s casino employees want a piece of the action too. If Loto-Québec has posted record profits, they feel they too should benefit, especially as inflation is impoverishing many.

Loto-Québec has long claimed to be ready to negotiate with the CSN. However, the CSN points out that the state-owned company has simply been making the same offer over and over again since February 28. For the angry employees, management seems to want to negotiate on its own, which has its limits.
For their part, they are seeking a wage increase equivalent to the rise in the cost of living plus 1 Canadian dollar per hour, in order to anticipate the effects of ongoing inflation.
This demand is intended to boost the purchasing power of our staff, which should in turn increase employee attraction and retention at a time of high turnover.
Strike unlikely to cause much disruption to casino operations
Despite the strike, Loto-Québec has announced that all its casinos are operating normally. Only the Casino de Mont-Tremblant had to close for a few hours to organize the resumption of operations.
The state-owned company says it is disappointed by the CSN’s decision to go on strike without notice instead of remaining at the bargaining table.
For the record, the 2023 Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, June 18, on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Notre-Dame. As the Casino de Montréal is located nearby, Loto-Québec hopes to attract some of the many tourists who come to watch the race.
