Golden Nugget Atlantic City accused of cheating in craps
We hear quite regularly about cheating techniques used by players to win big at the casino.
Cases involving the opposite, i.e., the implementation of cheating by a casino against its customers, prove to be much rarer.
Nevertheless, one such case is currently under investigation in the United States.
Indeed, a New York court has just asked New Jersey regulators to investigate allegations from a player who accuses the Golden Nugget Atlantic City of using improper dice in the game of craps.
Dice that were not transparent as required by regulation
Between the years 2018 and 2019, a player named Wayne Chan lost no less than $469,125 on craps tables at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City.
According to him, the hotel-casino used dice that were not transparent, in violation of New Jersey laws and regulations.
In fact, he even suspects that they were rigged. That’s why he sued the gaming establishment in federal court in Newark in September 2021.
According to New Jersey state regulations, the dice used by casinos must be transparent and made exclusively of cellulose, except for stains and other markings on them. This is to prove to the players that the dice are not rigged.
According to Wayne Chan, the dice at the craps tables where he lost big were not transparent. He reportedly expressed his concerns about this to the resort manager.
The manager reportedly told him that the dice had been in use for years and had never caused any problems for customers.
For Wayne Chan, these non-transparent dice are already a violation of the law.
And worse, it may have allowed the Golden Nugget Atlantic City to cheat against him during his losing game sessions from a few years ago.
New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement to rule in case
In suing the Golden Nugget Atlantic City, Wayne Chan wanted to at least get his losses back. Unfortunately for him, his claim was unsuccessful. The complex therefore claimed the $200,000 he had not yet paid the players.
A few days ago there was a reversal in this case. The Manhattan First Department Appellate Court ruled that the New Jersey court had been premature in granting its judgment.
It then held that it was up to the state regulator to determine whether the dice had indeed been loaded.
For the record, Wayne Chan had already filed a complaint with the Division of Gaming Enforcement, during January 2020.
In that complaint, he claimed that the dice used in his losing craps games had stripes and were not transparent.
He claimed that this was a violation of the law and affected the integrity of the dice by making them unbalanced, thus calling into question the fairness of the games.
At this time, the regulatory authority has not yet issued a decision on this complaint.
