A union is already protesting in front of the City of Dreams Mediterranean
During 2018, the Melco Resorts & Entertainment group was granted a 30-year license to develop the City of Dreams Mediterranean in the coastal city of Limassol on the island of Cyprus.
Originally budgeted at 550 million euros, the hotel-casino was due to open in 2021.
However, due to the international Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, the opening was delayed until Monday July 10, 2023.
The day after the inauguration, a trade union held a demonstration on Tuesday, July 11.
To protest Melco Resorts & Entertainment’s efforts to prevent employees from unionizing
No fewer than 3,500 employees work at the City of Dreams Mediterranean. Nevertheless, 2 unions don’t seem at all satisfied with the way the Melco Resorts & Entertainment group treats them.
These are the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) on the one hand and the Democratic Labour Federation of Cyprus (DEOK) on the other. This is why they have decided to make their dissatisfaction known.
A week before the opening of the hotel-casino, they announced that they would be holding a public demonstration on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Of course, this date was not chosen at random. In fact, it was the day after the opening of the complex, and a major media campaign was planned for that very day.
What motivated the 2 unions to stage this demonstration was the alleged efforts of the Melco Resorts & Entertainment group to prevent employees from unionizing.
PEO and DEOK claim that the operator prohibits union representatives from entering the workplace, which is denied by the operator.
Despite several meetings, City of Dreams Mediterranean management does not seem to want to back down from its position.
This is why the 2 unions have decided to launch a demonstration starting at 5:30pm on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.
Nevertheless, less than 24 hours before this protest, the DEOK announced that it had decided to abstain from taking part in the demonstration.
On the contrary, the PEO had made it known that it would not back down until the Melco Resorts & Entertainment group agreed to allow union representatives access inside the hotel-casino.

The many activities on offer at City of Dreams Mediterranean
Covering an area of over 14.8 hectares, the City of Dreams Mediterranean offers a wide range of activities. The casino is sure to attract the most attention.
Covering more than 7,400 m², it features no fewer than 750 slot machines and 75 tables dedicated to traditional games.
There are also over 500 luxury rooms and suites, an open-air amphitheatre, a family adventure park, restaurants, bars, stores and 8,000 m² of meeting and convention space.
