Ambrose So steps down as head of SJM Holdings
The latest annual general meeting of SJM Holdings, which holds one of the 6 land-based casino licenses in Macau, took place on Thursday June 15.
On this occasion, the group’s vice-president, executive director and long-standing CEO (Ambrose So) officially retired.
A new page has thus been turned for this legendary Macau operator, following the death on May 26, 2020 of its iconic founder: tycoon Stanley Ho.
Ambrose So’s retirement announced last April
Today’s decision comes as no surprise whatsoever. Indeed, Ambrose So had already announced back in April that he was preparing to retire.
Consequently, it came as no surprise that he did not seek re-election at SJM Holdings’ recent Annual General Meeting. Nevertheless, he will remain a Group advisor and a director of SJM Resorts, the subsidiary which owns a gaming concession in Macau.
In a recent press release issued just a few days ago, SJM Holdings paid tribute to the valuable contribution made by Ambrose So throughout his tenure.
The Group also announced that David Shum Hong Kuen had officially become Vice President, Executive Director and CEO as of Thursday June 15.

It was Stanley Ho who founded SJM Holdings. His long-serving and trusted lieutenant Ambrose So spent almost 48 years with the various companies founded by Macau’s famous land-based casino magnate.
During his glorious career, he earned an excellent reputation as a valuable peacemaker.
For example, he worked masterfully to ease existing tensions between the various factions vying for control of the many companies when their iconic founder fell ill in 2009 and died in 2020.

Today, SJM Holdings operates 9 satellite casinos and 3 autopromus casinos in Macau. It also operates 2 of the most famous hotel-casinos in the former Portuguese colony.
On the peninsula, the Grand Lisboa has established itself since its opening in 2008 as the most emblematic skyscraper in the entire region.
The casino itself features no fewer than 800 traditional gaming tables and 1,000 slot machines. On the Cotai Strip, the Grand Lisboa Palace was inaugurated on June 31, 2021. It features a hotel with 1,350 rooms and suites.
Other amenities are also due to be added in a future construction phase. These include, for example, the 270 hotel rooms in the Karl Lagerfeld Tower.
