Square Enix has just announced that its Final Fantasy XV has just passed a highly symbolic milestone just over five years after its release.
Released on November 29, 2016 on PS4, Xbox One and in 2018 on PC, Final Fantasy 15 just passed the 10 million unit sales mark. A very nice score, certainly, but that we would have seen higher insofar as the software had made a record start by selling no less than 5 million units in just 2 days.
Noctis can’t come close to Lara?
As a bonus, as our colleagues from Eurogamer point out, if FF15 sold well and recorded a more than honorable figure, it still does not compare with Tomb Raider whose episodes of the last trilogy have sold more than 38 million copies at the latest news. In this total, the reboot of Tomb Raider (2013) sold around 14.5 million units, 11.8 million for Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015). Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2019) would have sold around 11 million units if we do the math.
An amusing parallel when we know that Square Enix recently sold several Western studios to Embracer, including Crystal Dynamics in charge of Tomb Raiderin particular with a view to “maximizing its profitability”.
Now we just have to see if the next Final Fantasy 16 will do better than its big brother.
