Do you want to follow the traditional video game Oscars ceremony, the Game Awards? Check out our full event guide right here.
Like the BAFTA Games Awards or some Japan Game Awards, the Game Awards (formerly Spike VGA) are the year-end ceremony that rewards a year of video games. Who will get the Game of the Year (GOTY) title? We will know at the end of the event presented by the journalist fan of Doritos, Geoff keighley.
When and where to watch the Game Awards 2021?
Already on VGR, because sorry, but he better read the news of video games with us than in others, for a lot of reasons that we will not mention.
Then, of course, the ceremony will be broadcast live on the official website of the event and also on Twitch or Youtube in 4K. The event takes place at Microsoft Theater from Los Angeles (but the fact that Xbox Game Studios is the most named publisher has no connection, stop being slanderous), this Friday December 10 between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. in France.
What will we see?
Mainly video games and stars, but you can imagine. According to Keighley, a fifty games will be unveiled, as well as film trailers like Sonic 2, series and at least one half-dozen “World Premieres” games never revealed. We should also see more of the Matrix Awakens experience on PS5, with the announced presence of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, on tour for the new Matrix 4.
We will also see singers there, like Sting or Imagine Dragons. The pop group notably signed the soundtrack of the animated series Arcane, based on the universe of League of Legends, which made a big splash this year on Netflix. the Game Awards Orchestra will also be back, with Lorne Balfe in charge (Mission Impossible, Black Widow, Assassin’s Creed III, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 …)
Who are the nominees for the 2021 Game Awards?
You can find the full list of nominations on this page. For the game of the year, the 6 titles selected in 2021 are Deathloop, It Takes Two, Metroid Dread, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Resident Evil Village.
Deathloop, Arkane’s game, is also the most named this year with 9 possible prizes, including the GOTY, Best Narration, Best Audio Design, or Best Action Game. It Takes Two and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are also well placed with 6 nominations each. In total, Xbox Game Studios is the publisher most in contention, ahead of Sony and Electronic Arts, and a studio also owned by Microsoft, Bethesda Softworks.
The votes were taken by a jury made up of members from 103 media outlets around the world (but not us, so the result will only be very relative) who will have a weight of 90% on the final result. The public was able to vote on the website, and will represent 10% of the votes. There is also the Audience Prize, totally decided by the voters, and whose 3rd round is currently underway with a definite advantage for Halo Infinite.
