One of the main players in the mobile market is experiencing financial difficulties that have forced it to clean up its workforce and cancel several projects.
Best known for the breakthrough Pokémon Go and Ingress Prime, Niantic is in turmoil and had to separate from several dozen employees in addition tocancel no less than four projectsincluding Hamlet and Transformers: Heavy Metal.
8% fewer employees, Niantic is in crisis
Bloomberg is reporting the story after getting hold of an email sent internally. Niantic explains that it must lay off no less than 8% of its workforce (or 80-90 people) while the company is “facing a period of economic turmoil”.
After cancelling several projects and making many other concessions to save the furniture, the box wants to further “streamline its operations to best position the company to weather any economic storms that may come.”
As a reminder, Niantic had already put to death several other games like Harry Potter: Wizard Unite released in 2019 which had not found its audience. Now, the studio will focus more on games that worklike Pokémon Go which is still running pretty well, and should walk on eggshells while waiting for the sequel.
