The Nintendo console alone is 5 times more than the other consoles in the Japanese market. Big N can thank the OLED (and the PS5 shortage?).
Nintendo’s console is selling well in its stronghold. It’s obvious but Big N must still be delighted with these figures, compiled by Famitsu. In total in 2021, the Switch was sold to 5.3 million units, counting all the models, namely the “normal”, the Lite and the new OLED.
Despite tight demand at the end of the year due to the shortage (and player interest in the new model), Nintendo seems to have held firm. Indeed, 5.3 million is more or less identical to the figures for the year 2020. At this period, the manufacturer was 5.1 million over 12 months. It should be noted, however, that the figures stop before Christmas week, a critical period for manufacturers. By adding it, the Switch had exceeded 5.9 million in 2020, it is therefore not trivial.
Finally, to put it in context, this total represents approximately 5 times more than PS5, PS4, Xbox Series and 3DS combined. Four consoles that only sold a few tens of thousands of copies in 2021, except the PS5 which is barely approaching a million.
