While the remake of the FPS System Shock is doing well, the future of the license remains uncertain. Can we expect the announcement of a third opus soon?

Nightdive Studios took advantage of Gamescom 2022 to unveil new images of the System Shock remakea cult game released in 1994. Originally, a third opus was also in development. This project had been set up by the Otherside Entertainment team before being interrupted earlier this year. Since then, the rights to the license have passed to Tencent, but for all that, the future of the franchise is not assured.

goodbye, Hacker

Let’s go back quickly to March and more precisely when Paul Neurath and Warren Spector passed the torch to the Chinese firm. The latter stated at the time:

We issued a statement last year. There’s not much more to say at this point. Tencent is handling the franchise. It will be up to them to say what they want to say. I can’t give you many specifics. We worked on it in 2018 and 2019. And that’s it.

Since that announcement, nothing more. System Shock 3 is now out of circulation. For good? Nothing is certain yet. This time, it was the CEO of Nightdive who spoke. The latter recalled the current state of the license while specifying that he had no knowledge of Tencent’s plans. However, if it turns out that a three is indeed on track, we can potentially expect to see a 4 and a 5 coming after.

As a more positive note, our man specified well that on the side of his studio, a remake of the second opus released in 1998 is quite possible. You’ll have to be patient, but at least System Shock won’t disappear anytime soon.

While we wait for more information, we’ll be able to enjoy the remake of System Shock. Even if the release date has not yet been announced, we know that the title will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Series.
