The start of 2022 is off to a good start for Big N and its little Nintendo Switch, which has sold more units than the Wii phenomenon. It also reached a fateful milestone faster than two PlayStation consoles.
It undeniably lacks power, but its success has nothing to envy to other faster consoles. As of December 31, 2021, 103.54 million Nintendo Switch were sold, a figure that eclipses that of the Wii (101.63 million units) and offers the manufacturer a new record.
According to the complete data of Daniel Ahmad (relayed by VGC), it is the base model that has been the most popular since its release in March 2017, with the bulk of sales made in the United States ahead of Europe and Japan :

For the firm, the Switch OLED therefore operates a “good start”. If we align the launches of other machines, the Switch sells faster than the PS4 and PS2 (and therefore Wii), but does not catch up with the small DS:
Chart below looks at Switch sell in compared to other consoles when launch aligned.
– Switch has surpassed Wii (101.63m) and PS1 (102.49m) after 58 months on the market

In this ocean of records, there is still bad news: a drop in console sales of 21.4%. Nintendo invokes the shortage of semiconductors as the first cause, and also a less prosperous period compared to 2020 which saw Animal Crossing: New Horizons tumble. The console still won 18.95 million additional buyers during the first 9 months of fiscal year 2022.
