Nintendo is THE brand par excellence in Japan, alongside Sony, and the firm is proud to announce that a new milestone has been reached by its console.
Needless to say the Nintendo Switch is a hit around the world, with more than 107 million units sold (as of March 31, 2022). Yes, it’s huge, but still not as much as the Game Boy (118 million) or the DS (154 million). But it might just be a matter of time.
Still more Switch in Japan, and record game sales
On Japanese soil, the Nintendo Switch has just passed the bar of 25 million units sold. A very nice score that allows console games to be sold by the entire palette.
In the top of the best-selling games in Japan, it is Animal Crossing New Horizons breaking all records with more than 7.26 million of specimens in the wild, followed by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and its 4.89 million and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with no less than 4.66 million of units passed. Then come Pokémon Sword and Shield with 4.39 million of liquidated games and Splatoon 2 with 4.08 million.
An unsurprising national top 5, but which differs somewhat from the world’s best sellers
Best selling Switch games as of March 31, 2022
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 45.33 million
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 38.64 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 28.17 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 26.55 million
- Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield – 24.27 million
Anyway, Nintendo can sleep on both ears for a while and the Switch still has a bright future ahead of it, even if a Switch Pro could end up pointing the tip of its nose.
