The English version of The Sims 4 now allows you to change your Sim’s pronouns (They, Him, or Her). The French version should be able to get the same thing soon, for more inclusiveness.
It was a request that had been circulating on social networks for several years, a petition had even been launched at the end of 2021 to ask EA to make the Sims more inclusive. If the objective of 25,000 signatures was not reached, it was still more than 20,000 players who had requested, in particular, to be able to choose the pronouns in the game.
Of which act for EA and Maxis which formalizes the new function, that we expected to see in the Sims 5 but which will finally land already in this 4th opus. With the new update, players have a new drop-down menu next to the newly created Sim’s first and last name, alternating between They/Them, He/Him and She/Her (either in French iel, he or she).
An option also allows you to customize a whole bunch of pronouns and revise your grammar since it is possible to change the subjective, objective, dependent possessive, independent possessive and reflexive pronoun. Personally, I didn’t even know there were so many.
Inclusiveness has been a core value of The Sims franchise for over 22 years, and the development team believes that diversity drives innovation and community. It was important to her to introduce the functionality of pronouns in the best way possible, which is why she worked closely working with the It Gets Better Project and GLAAD to better understand the use and impact of pronouns and where binary representations of gender were present in The Sims 4.
For the moment, only english version has this function, which should arrive soon in other languages including French. EA even announces that this is a “first step” towards more inclusiveness in the game. To learn more about this V1 of the personalized pronouns, go to the blog.
