Majority of iPhone games “rubbish” says developer
The game approval process for Apple’s App Store isn’t tough enough, letting plenty of pish games trickle through unashamedly to the mobile game shop says a developer.
Boasters Apple were keen to tout its growing games catalogue, hailing it as the biggest portable collection of games currently available but LostWinds dev’ David Braben reckons that most of ‘em are “rubbish.”
Braben said that the game approval process needs to be more stringent, just like Nintendo’s.
“There’s a little bit of a ‘gate keeper’ thing with Nintendo which raises the bar very slightly because you’ve got to have dev kits, but that’s a good thing,” Braben told CVG.
“Look at iPhone; there are so many games that aren’t up to scratch, without being too negative about it. It’s very hard to find the good stuff amongst the rubbish.”
He also mocked games and apps that copy better versions but are sold for much cheaper, with unaware shoppers thinking that they’re getting a quality product only to be left disappointed.
It’s of little surprise. For example there’s lots of Space Invaders games, or apps that do the same thing. Just do a search for “Torch” and you’ll see lots of versions vying for your hard-earned.

A bit condescending by this developer, apologies notwithstanding.
I wouldn’t assume what makes a “good” game simply because people have different levels of interest in playing games, especially video games. I would point to the Nintendo Wii’s huge success as evidence that game developers can sometimes get lost in their own ivory towers as to what the majority of people desire in gaming.
That’s the attraction in there being so many games on the iPhone…there’s bound to be one that meets your desires!
