Molyneux: Natal could be what the mouse was to PC
Sony might already have dabbled with full motion body tech with its PlayStation Eye camera but the introduction of Project Natal will something altogether different says Fable designer and Microsoft’s Euro studios man Peter Molyneux, who reckons it could be as big a paradigm shift as the humble mouse was to the PC.
Rather than simply adding alternative control schemes to games Molyneux reckons the Microsoft tech could potentially alter the way we play games forever, comparing it to the beginnings of the humble mouse.
“If you’re thinking that Natal is going to give you another version of an FPS, you’re just not thinking broadly enough. After all, it was the invention of the mouse that gave us computing as it is today – not the invention of the microprocessor.
But will we be playing games with our bodies in future? We just might, Molyneux suggested.
“The mouse was the real revolution of the PC — not the Intel processor. And who’s to say Natal couldn’t end up creating something you and I can’t even imagine now. It forces us to approach technology in a completely different way. Before the mouse, we only had the keyboard.”
But will Natal really make us approach controlling games in a different way too? Let us know your thoughts?
