Video: Augmented reality zombies come to life

Augmented reality gaming: Where zombies come to lifeAn augmented reality research lab has shown off a game using a tabletop map that acts as a level to shoot zombies on, while letting gamers use real world objects in-game.

Georgia Tech Augmented Environments Lab and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD-Atlanta) has been showing the multiple possibilities augmented reality has for mainstream gaming with the help of a prototype handheld device from Nvidia.

It shows how users could create a map, place it on a flat surface and have it act as a level, or in this case a city backdrop to shoot up some zombies. In the video the player uses the handheld to hover over the map like a helicopter hunting down zombies to annihilate before they make a meal out of civilians.

The bit where it really gets cool is being able to place real world objects like Skittles in the game to act as bombs and signals. It sounds like the perfect workplace distraction.

Augmented reality games seem to be popping up more frequently.

Sony’s Invizimals, which lets users place computer generated objects in reality has already been shown off at E3, then there’s EyePet that lets users draw objects for a virtual pet to play with and then there’s Ghostwire that projects ghosts anywhere thanks to the Nintendo DSi’s camera.
