Online gaming in Ontario: figures up in 2Q23
On April 4, 2022, Ontario liberalized its online gaming market.
The latter is overseen by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, via its subsidiary iGaming Ontario, often simplified to iGO.
A short while ago, the latter published some interesting figures concerning the online gaming results of legal casinos in Ontario during the period from April to June 2023.
In particular, they prove the good health of the online casino in this Canadian province.
Sales up 3.6% year-on-year
As figures recently released by iGO tell us, gross revenues from online gaming in Ontario during the second quarter of 2023 reached C$545 million (approximately €372.64 million), representing a year-on-year increase of 3.6%.
Total bets placed were also up. At C$14 billion (€9.57 billion), it is now the best result ever achieved in Ontario’s young market.
The previous record dates back to the first quarter of 2023, when total bets placed reached 13.87 billion Canadian dollars (9.48 billion euros).
Online casino leads in Ontario
It has to be said that online casinos are extremely successful in Ontario. In the second quarter of 2023, it proved even more popular.
Bets placed, for example, reached 11.6 billion Canadian dollars (7.93 billion euros), representing 83% of the market in this field.
This is a better performance than in the period from April to June 2022, when this percentage stood at 78%.
In terms of gross gaming revenue, the online casino generated 392 million Canadian dollars (268 million euros), representing 72% of the market at this level.
This is once again a better performance than during the second quarter of 2022, when it still achieved the percentage of 67%.
On the contrary, while sports betting remains in second place, it has lost a little in popularity. Stakes placed amounted to 2 billion Canadian dollars (1.37 billion euros), representing 14% of the market, compared with 20% in the second quarter of 2022.
In terms of gross gaming revenue, they took in 138 million Canadian dollars (94.35 million euros), representing 25% of the market compared with 31% in the period from April to June 2022.
Last but not least, poker remains in third place, with its appeal seemingly unchanged. Bets placed reached 350 million Canadian dollars (239.28 million euros) and gross gaming revenue amounted to 15 million Canadian dollars (10.26 million euros).
For both, this represented 3% of the market, as in the second quarter of 2022.

Otherwise, iGO also reported that legally accessible platforms in Ontario rose from 75 to 71 over the 3 months, and licensed operators increased to 46.
In total, there were around 920,000 active player accounts in Ontario during the second quarter of 2023, each of which spent an average of C$148 (€101.19).
