Modern Warfare 2 boycott underway
Angry fans have set up a petition to Activision to boycott Modern Warfare 2 amid concerns over a higher retail price. It’s got over 6,000 signatures so far, and counting.
Earlier Activision suggested (to the disgust of gamers) a higher than usual recommended retail price of £54.99 for the title.
Fortunately retailers in the UK such as HMV are selling the game for less (£44.99) but it’s not just the game ’s price that angered gamers.
Activision CEO Robert Kotick recently joked “You know if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further,” further prompting the boycott.
At the time of writing the petition (here) has 6,380 signatures and counting, along with comments such as “boycott Activision” and “I am not going to be buying MW2.”
The petition also cites the addition of a peripheral for Tony Hawk: Ride; the first in the Tony Hawk franchise that uses a motion sensor skateboard and brands the Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition ridiculous.
Here’s the petition letter in full:
As the “biggest entertainment launch of all time” approaches, you’re increasingly making your fanbase more angry. Your recent moves on the business side are head scratching and completely appalling. Tony Hawk peripherals to start, PC and UK price hikes and ridiculously overpriced collectors editions for MW2. Gamers were left scratching their heads wondering why?
Than your CEO decided to further anger your customers with this quote “And Tony, you know if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further.” I believe we are in what we call a “recession.” What the consumer needs is not more expensive items, but less expensive, which we’re obviously not screaming for you to do. As people we speak with our wallets as we know you wont hear our words.
Everyone who signs this petition disagrees with your approach and your smug attitude. The undersigned agree not to purchase your game at full retail value. We instead will either choose to A.) not purchase MW2. B.)Purchase only in used form allowing no revenue for you. C.)Import from a cheaper country. This may not seem like much of a threat, but the internet is a large place and your wallets may seem a little lighter come Christmas time. Thank you.

This game’ll be rubbish anyway as there doesn’t seem any improvement from cod4’s 2yr old engine, bring on operation flashpoint 2 and B:BC2
The game will still sell 3 million the first weekend, so 6000 sigs are not going to hurt Activision…
These people stupid? The game aint gonna retail at £44.99 (let alone £55) If it does youll be stupid for buying it at HMV in the first place! Go Asda or Tesco they sell the games for cheap because they think “know” your gonna buy other things while your there
Hey all,
There’s another petition here -

Would love it to work as soon all good games will be £45+ but sadly too many people are going to buy it.
And then the map packs? Will be about £15-30 extra if they decide to release a number this time (as they most likely will with the already raised prices).
