Unlimited strike in Quebec casinos
Today, state-owned Loto-Québec operates land-based casinos in Montreal, Mont-Tremblant, Charlevoix and Gatineau, as well as the online gaming platform Espace Jeux.
For some time now, there has been a dispute over salaries between management and employees.
On Thursday June 22, a general meeting voted to call an indefinite strike.

For several months now, the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux has been seeking a wage increase to combat inflation.
It is calling for a increase equal to the cost of living plus $1 Canadian per hour in order to face the future more serenely. In her opinion, this should not harm Loto-Québec, which is doing very well at the moment.
It has to be said that the state-owned company has made substantial profits, enabling management to share out 650,000 Canadian dollars in bonuses this year. The Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux therefore believes that workers should also be able to benefit from the group’s good results.
Of course, this view is not really validated by Loto-Québec, which considers that it offers good working conditions and points out that salaries are well above the reference market, at over 20% for most trades.
In addition, the state-owned company adds that the value of the demands currently being made by the union is more than double what has been granted to all the group’s other employees over the past year.
Loto-Québec has also made proposals to the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux, which have always been rejected.
A strike involving some 1,700 Loto-Québec group employees
This wage dispute has already triggered a 5-day strike around the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. For the record, the latter took place on June 18, 2023 on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, which sits on the artificial island of Notre Dame near the Casino de Montréal.
On this important weekend, which always attracts huge numbers of tourists, the social movement did not cause much disruption.
In a recent press release, Loto-Québec announced that the current strike involves some 1,700 employees. The Casino du Lac-Leamy, Salon de jeux de Trois-Rivières and Salon de jeux de Québec remain open as usual.
The casinos in Montreal, Charlevoix and Mont-Tremblant, on the other hand, have modified their opening hours to suit the specific needs of each complex. Finally, customer support on the Espace Jeux platform is not available.
The state-owned company has already made it known that it hopes for a rapid resumption of discussions with the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux and the conciliator, so as to finally arrive at an equitable arrangement that allows for responsible management of public funds.
