In an interview, the director of the God of War license indicates that many PlayStation studios were pushing to be able to arrive on PC. He also gives his opinion for God of War Ragnarok.
Failing to be able to release on Xbox or Switch because of console exclusivity, PlayStation studios hoped to broaden the audience for their games by grabbing keyboard/mouse gamers.
Thereby, Cory Barlog, the producer of God of War, admits that the arrival of his game on PC, as well as the many planned ports of exclusive games to the PS4/PS5, are a true will of the studios.
In an interview with Game Informer, he explains:
I think it was the studio collective as a whole that said it was a really good idea. We had to pay attention to it. Eventually, I think the tipping point has been reached. We sent so many suggestions to the suggestion box that they (Sony, editor’s note) were like, “I’m tired of hearing all this. OK, we’ll do it. It’s a process. We’re still figuring out how to do that, as a company and as individual studios, and what the strategy will be.”
Before God of War, PlayStation dropped its Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn exclusions on PC, then signed a new studio dedicated to PC porting, in line with the group’s new strategy in this area.
And for the new album, God of War Ragnarok?
I’ve no idea. Right now, we’re taking game by game, watching each one and wondering if it’s the right thing to do. And we’ll see how it goes. Do people like it? Did we do it right? Is there something we did wrong? What can we improve in the future if we do it again? But in the end, it’s Sony who decides.
What could be more normal than to also want to touch the glorious master race when making video games?
