From January 28, the video game hostilities of 2022 will be launched with the return of two successful PS4 titles brought together in the same compilation, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, both revisited for the PS5. And since the matches have already been played for a long time in our columns, we invite you now to (re)read the UC4 test, and that of The Lost Legacy, to know all the qualities and defects.

As a result, we will focus on the technical improvements made and the implementation of PlayStation 5 features, such as the adaptive triggers/haptic feedback of DualSense, or even 3D audio. Should you succumb to the €10 patch if you have these shutters? And after respective releases in 2016 and 2017, are Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy aging?

Like good wine

No, and it is even amazing to see how these two episodes retain their technical mastery and can still stand up to current productions, especially in terms of modeling and facial animations for example. An intact youth that reminds us of the UC2 and UC3 remasters from the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. If you haven’t re-launched apps recently, then you may not (or less) realize it, but there are differences. We will note textures above what was offered before, finer models (Elena’s eyebrows…), just like the vegetation more nuanced in places (ex: at the beginning of chapter 11 “The Twelve Towers”). Although we do not have the details of the modifications made, the bottom line is that despite the years that have passed, UC4 and its spin-off look better than ever, without obviously being new new-gen games.

Absolutely stunning beauty

On the other hand, where there is no need to procrastinate for hours is on fluidity. At the time, only Uncharted 4’s multiplayer – not available in the collection – could boast of being 60fps, compared to 30fps for the campaign. But at the same time, it was priced at a less flashy multi. Error fixed: the solo is now at 60fps, and inevitably, it is felt immediately and it is the gunfights that take advantage of it the most. What to say? The sequences are still very effective today, with the added bonus of responsiveness at all times without losing graphic quality, or details not visible in the action. For those who prefer resolution, there is a native 4K 30fps “Fidelity” mode… and for the most extreme, a “Performance+” option 1080p at 120fps. Everyone will see noon on their doorstep, but for such a non-competitive app, 60fps is more than enough.

PS5 obliges, Naughty Dog had to review certain things, the most glaring of which is the DualSense controller support with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. Do not expect a revolution at the risk of being very disappointed, since we have an honest exploitation but not a game changer. The increased immersion is clearly on the gunfight side where you feel the gunfire and behaviors (resistance, recoil…), which vary from one gun to another. Apart from that, haptic feedback is used during fallout following a jump, at sea when the boat hits the waves… but is not always called upon, witness of an addition that was not intended to radically transform the experience. In terms of sound design, 3D audio highlights an already ultra-solid soundtrack, whether we are talking about music, sound effects (guns, environmental sounds, etc.), and you will continue to fill your ears (in addition to the eyes).

An unmissable compilation on PS5

Finally, the loads are now instantaneous to better appreciate your deaths, the launch of the game or the selection of a chapter to relive (once the game is closed). Certainly, UC4 or even The Last of Us were already examples, but comfort is even more important.
