The departures of two Hangar 13 executives this week are said to be linked to 2K’s desire to offer a new installment in the franchise with a new dedicated team.

This week, 2K lost one of its leaders, Haden Blackman. Manager of the Hangar 13 studio, he had mainly worked on mafia license and in particular the three reissues of the franchise that we tested here. Following this departure, Kotaku announced having previously had indications of a prequel to the series which would be at the beginning of its development.

In an email sent to his collaborators, the former director of the studio announced “to pursue his passion in a new company”. The site recalls that 2K, in its reshuffling internal mail (Nick Baynes was promoted in place of Blackman)did not mention the departure of Matthew Urban, COO of Hangar 13as the latter announced on his LinkedIn.

Two departures fundamentally linked to the Mafia saga to a new studio and which would be the way for 2K to revive the franchise with a new opus under a new team and a new eye. This new title, a prequel to Mafia, codenamed Neroshould use engine Unreal Engine 5 replacing the aging proprietary Illusion Engine used since Mafia 2.
