During the month of July, it was learned that the famous Irish rock band U2 was going to perform in 2023 in Las Vegas via a residency in the brand new MSG Sphere showroom of The Venetian hotel-casino.
But here’s the thing: a recent article in the Washington Post tells us that iconic drummer Larry Mullen Jr. is having health problems.
So, the famous residency might be done without him or be cancelled altogether.
To celebrate the opening of the MSG Sphere at the Venetian Las Vegas
In September 2023, the iconic hotel-casino The Venetian on the Strip will be home to the MSG Sphere. This brand new $1.8 billion entertainment venue will be the largest spherical structure in the world.
At 118 meters high, it is expected to seat between 17,500 and 20,000 people and offer a state-of-the-art audio and visual experience. It was originally scheduled to open in 2021. However, the international Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic has delayed its launch until 2023.
It is precisely U2 that should be in charge of inaugurating it with its residence of 12 concerts planned over 6 weekends. We must recognize that this is a major event since the rock band from Dublin has not performed on stage in the United States since the end of its Experience + Innocence tour in July 2018.
Incidentally, its very last concert in the world was in Mumbai, India in December 2019.

Surgery to keep Larry Mullen Jr. playing
Unfortunately for the many American fans of U2, this famous residency could be in question. Indeed, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. has been suffering from neck and elbow problems for a long time now and he will soon have to undergo surgery to be able to continue playing.
So, a recent article in the Washington Post states that if the band performs live in 2023, it will probably be without Larry Mullen Jr. In short, U2 may even decide not to perform at all.
It would therefore cancel its residency at the MSG Sphere at The Venetian Las Vegas hotel-casino.
The real founder of the band U2
Larry Mullen Jr. has been the iconic drummer since the beginning of U2 in 1976. He arguably formed the band by pinning a note on the bulletin board at Mount Temple School in Dublin, looking for other musicians.
In fact, he reportedly told the Washington Post reporter that he would not perform in concert next year and that he did not know what the band’s plans were. It should also be noted that U2 has never performed without its founding members.
In short, the MSG Sphere may well have to find other international music stars for its inauguration at The Venetian Las Vegas hotel-casino.
