Residences are booming in Las Vegas
Over the next few months, there are quite a few must-see music stars who will be in residence at a Las Vegas hotel-casino.
Among them are Katy Perry, Adele, Usher, Maroon 5 and Bruno Mars. It was the Quebec singer Celine Dion who popularized this kind of concert series 20 years ago.
Nowadays, residences are more and more in vogue in the famous city of the state of Nevada.
More ambitious shows as touring became more difficult to mount
Over the past 20 years, there have been a dozen new theaters erected in Las Vegas. The newest one is called Resorts World Theatre. It opened in June 2021, along with the Resorts World Las Vegas hotel-casino that houses it.
Designed by Montreal-based Scéno Plus, it contains within it 4,700 seats.
One might wonder why such a performance hall was inaugurated, when one knows that the city already has many others. It is because it hosts the most advanced technologies and is totally suitable for residences. And this kind of concert series that needs modern halls is booming at the moment.
Thanks to residencies, you can put on really ambitious shows: bigger and more complicated than the ones that have to be moved every day from city to city.
Also, with the digitization of music, artists are becoming more and more dependent on performance revenue.
But with the international Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and the explosion of inflation, it has become difficult to afford to go on tour. That’s why more and more stars decide to offer a residency in Las Vegas. They can stay in Las Vegas and their fans are the ones who travel.
Celine Dion’s legacy
Originally, the Resorts World Theatre was designed to host a new residence for Celine Dion. In the end, due to health problems, it was postponed. Nevertheless, it was not difficult to find stars to replace her.
However, it was she who was the reason for the renewed interest in Las Vegas residences. Before her 2 series of concert events that took place respectively from 2003 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2019, it had been years that this fashion had passed. It had been launched in its time by Elvis Presley. However, no one before her had done anything of this magnitude. Now, more and more artists are inspired by it.
Some examples of residencies from 2023
During the current year 2023, there are quite a few ambitious residences that are already planned. We can mention some of them.
For example, Bruno Mars will play at the Dolby Live Theatre at Park MGM from May 23 to June 3. This venue will also host Maroon 5 from March 24 to April 7 and July 28 to August 12 and Usher from March 1 to October 28.
Meanwhile, the Resorts World Theatre will host Katy Perry from February 15 to August 12 and Luke Bryan from March 22 to September 9.
