Strike continues at Casino du Lac-Leamy
For over a month now, some employees of the Casino du Lac-Leamy operated by Loto-Québec in Gatineau, Canada, have been on indefinite strike.
Nevertheless, negotiations with management remain at a standstill. That’s why some fifty employees affiliated to the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux (CSN) have decided to take action that is, to say the least, unusual.
On Sunday July 23, they took part in a nautical demonstration on Lake Leamy.
Signs on boats to demand higher wages
With negotiations stalling, striking Casino du Lac-Leamy employees decided to innovate. Combining business with pleasure, some fifty of them took part in a nautical demonstration.
They took advantage of the water point that runs around the casino to load signs onto canoes, kayaks or paddle boards, for example.
Their demands have been the same since the beginning of the social movement: they want wages to be raised closer to the cost of living, which is constantly rising due to inflation. This would not only improve conditions for workers, but also help to retain them.
Casino du Lac-Leamy: opening hours unchanged but service reduced
The strike which began on June 15 may seem to some to have had no impact on operations at the Casino du Lac-Leamy. Indeed, the opening hours of the gaming room itself have remained unchanged. So you can still come and enjoy yourself every day from 9am to 3am from Sunday to Thursday, and until 5am on Friday and Saturday.
However, it has to be said that the service has been considerably reduced. This can be seen, for example, at the Hilton Hotel restaurant.
The restaurant normally serves grilled meats and seafood. Nowadays, however, you can only eat breakfast there. Similarly, room service is no longer available, and the cigar bar is also closed.
In short, guests can now only enjoy their rooms and minimal service in the Hilton’s restaurant. This reduced level of activity can be seen throughout the Casino du Lac-Leamy.
No official comment from Loto-Québec since a press release dated July 5, 2023.
Since a press release issued on July 5, the state-owned Loto-Québec has consistently refused to comment on the strike, referring each time to this communication.
In its view, the majority of employees affiliated to the CSN benefited from the good financial results the group achieved in 2022, thanks to an incentive compensation program. For example, approximately 65% of hours worked were covered by bonuses.
The state-owned Loto-Québec therefore regretted the CSN’s decision to continue the indefinite strike by refusing the interesting proposals that had been made.
