The continued success of baccarat in Macau
It was the mythical tycoon Stanley Ho who imposed baccarat in Macau, putting it on the map in his land-based casinos during the 1960s, when he still had a monopoly in this part of the world.
Since then, it has always been the most popular game in this market.
This is still the case today, as recent published figures prove once again.
These are for the first quarter of the current year 2023.
A sharp increase in mainstream baccarat from 2019
According to recent figures released a short while ago, baccarat targeting the general public has raked in no less than 20.51 billion MOP, or about 2.32 billion euros. This represents about 58.9% of the gross gaming revenue generated in Macau over this period.
It can be noted that the share of mainstream baccarat is down from the previous quarter. In fact, between October and December 2022, it represented about 62.9% of Macau’s gross gaming revenue.
Nevertheless, these results cannot really be compared. Throughout last year, it should be remembered that the former Portuguese colony suffered severe restrictions that greatly reduced the number of tourists in order to combat the international Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Consequently, it is much more interesting to compare with the year 2019, which is the last one before the global health crisis.
At that time, mainstream baccarat only accounted for about 39.1% of gross gaming revenue in this market. Thus, there has been a significant increase.
VIP baccarat down due to collapse of junkets sector
Overall, baccarat remains the leading game in Macau. In fact, in the first quarter of 2023, this card game targeting VIPs took in MOP 8.57 billion (€970 million), which represents about 24.6% of the overall gross gaming revenue of the market.
For comparison, it accounted for 48.7% in 2019. As a result, baccarat took in no less than 87.5% of the overall gross gaming revenue in Macau between January and March 2023!
These different figures also allow us to note a significant increase in mainstream baccarat and a decrease in VIP baccarat.
This follows the collapse of the junkets industry, after the arrests of key figures in this sector: Alvin Chau (the former CEO of Suncity Group) in November 2021 on the one hand and Levo Chan (the former CEO of Tak Chun Group) in January 2022 on the other. As a result, the number of authorized junkets has dropped to 36 in 2023 from 46 last year and no less than 235 in 2013.
At the overall level, it can also be noted that Macau’s gross gaming revenue for the first quarter of 2023 reached MOP 34.81 billion (€3.94 million).
