Marina Bay Sands: gambler convicted of cashing casino vouchers
When you’re in a land-based casino, you can sometimes find vouchers on the floor. As a rule, they’re only worth a few cents and have been left there by players who didn’t feel like wasting time to get so little money back.
At the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, a tourist from Indonesia found 8 vouchers worth a total of S$24,000equivalent to around 16,378 euros.
Unfortunately for him, he had the bad idea of exchanging them.
For this, he’s just been sentenced to 4 months in prison by the city-state’s justice system.
Just arrived at Marina Bay Sands to play in the Ruby Room
The player who interests us in today’s news is Silitonga Andri Parulian. Aged 27, this Indonesian travelled to Singapore for a few days’ vacation earlier this year.
On March 26, he admitted to finding 8 casino vouchers in the Marina Bay Sands gaming room, having just arrived at the hotel-casino to play in the Ruby Room. He decided to cash in the vouchers and flee the country.
Officials from Singapore’s Attorney General’s office filed a complaint against him. Only a few days ago, he had to answer for his actions in court.

Tourist located at Changi airport while trying to return to Indonesia
Following an investigation, it was discovered that a senior executive at the Marina Bay Sands had accidentally dropped these vouchers, each worth S$3,000 (around 2,047 euros).
Shortly afterwards, Silitonga Andri Parulian picked them up and exchanged them with the casino cashiers.
It was only after the event that management realized the problem and alerted the police. They were soon able to locate the Indonesian tourist at Changi airport as he tried to return home.
During his interrogation, he was quick to admit the facts. He pleaded guilty to the sole charge of dishonest misappropriation of funds at his trial before District Judge Crystal Tan.
During the hearing, at which he was not represented by counsel, he stated that he regretted his actions.
A lenient prison sentence of just 4 months
As he confessed his guilt in court, District Judge Crystal Tan was lenient. On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, she sentenced him to just 4 months in prison.
It could well have been much longer. Dishonest misappropriation of funds can result in up to 2 years’ imprisonment.
Normally, Singaporean law stipulates that Silitonga Andri Parulian, after finding the casino vouchers, should have endeavored to find their rightful owner or notify law enforcement.
