Garden City votes against Las Vegas Sands casino in Nassau
At the moment, several very large land-based casino operators are seeking to obtain one of the 3 licenses in southern New York State where the famous city of the same name is located.
Among them is the Las Vegas Sands group, which is working on a project that could be built in place of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island.
That doesn’t seem to please the board of trustees of the nearby Village of Garden City very much.
A symbolic vote by the Garden City Board of Trustees
Only a few days ago, the Garden City Board of Directors held a purely symbolic vote on the hotel-casino project in Nassau County carried by the Las Vegas Sands group. It was unanimously rejected.
It should be noted that this village is located less than a mile from the grounds of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on which the gaming complex could be built. With this vote, the Board of Trustees wants to publicly express its firm opposition to the project. The Board is concerned that the project will have a negative impact on the quality of life and character of the surrounding communities.
Moreover, this sentiment seems to be shared by the local population. Elected officials indicated that they had heard many negative comments about this proposed hotel-casino from their constituents. These last ones fear in particular an increase of the insecurity.
As a result, the Garden City Board of Directors strongly encourages Nassau County to vote against this project.
Hofstra University president’s opposition
This is not the only opposition that has been expressed to the Las Vegas Sands group’s proposed hotel-casino on Long Island. President Susan Poser of the area’s largest private university (Hofstra University), for example, recently said that such a gambling establishment has no place in the vicinity of a place of higher learning.
The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is directly adjacent to the university, which has over 10,000 students. One of the reasons for her opposition was a 2021 study that showed that having a casino near a campus can increase the rate of problem gambling in the area.
Some background on the Las Vegas Sands project
For the record, it was on Thursday 12 January that the Las Vegas Sands group made official its hotel-casino project in Nassau County. For the time being, this American operator does not operate a complex of this kind in the United States. In fact, all these gaming establishments are located in Macau and Singapore.
That’s why it wants to spend up to $5 billion to build a hotel-casino in place of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
This is to house four- and five-star hotel rooms and suites, a world-class entertainment venue and outdoor community spaces. In addition to spa, pool, health club, bars and restaurants among other things, it would also feature a large casino with slot machines and tables dedicated to traditional games.
