The takeover of Bungie will allow Sony to launch a major new IP, probably with live-service content. Naughty Dog is also on a project on this same model.

To use an expression that one of our faithful readers found: a real “GaaS factory” is looming. In its latest conference with investors, the Sony group confirmed its plans for the game-services area. By 2026, the company expects to be able to release 10 new titles in the live-service form.

The confirmation was made by CFO Hiroki Totoki when commenting on Bungie’s takeover and interest in SIE. The studio is already working on a “major new IP” which could be planned in live-service. Naughty Dog is also working on a new game which will normally be in GaaS.

For the two from the bottom who have never played Sea of Thieves, Destiny 2 or Fortnite, we are talking here of games with content provided over time, including through monetized models like microtransactions or battle and season passes. But in this term, Sony can also group the titles offered in the form of a monthly subscription (like MMOs) or in the cloud, on demand.

The financial report also makes it possible to take stock of the results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2021, which ended on December 31. Sony’s operating profit climbed 32% to 3.6 billion euros, in particular thanks to its subsidiary Sony Pictures. But the video game sector remains the most profitable. Although sales were down significantly from the same quarter in 2020, revenue increased by 92 million euros.
