Tourism on the rise in Singapore
Like many other countries around the world, Singapore has implemented strict regulations to combat the spread of the international Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
This severely affected tourism in Southeast Asia’s famous city-state. Little by little, restrictions have eased. Further proof of this has just been provided by the number of tourists counted in April.
For the second month running, it topped the million mark.. This is excellent news for Singapore’s 2 hotel-casinos.
1.13 million tourists in Singapore by April 2023
The Singapore Tourism Board recently published some interesting figures. We learned that the city-state attracted no less than 1.13 million tourists during the month of April 2023.
This is an encouraging result, far exceeding the 1.02 million people who arrived in Singapore last March. As a result, the number of tourists has now exceeded 1 million for 2 consecutive months.
Incidentally, we also learnt that April 2023 was the best month for tourism in the city-state since the start of the global health crisis.
The number of visitors is getting closer and closer to the 1.7 million recorded in January 2020, i.e. before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 5 countries most represented by tourists in Singapore in April 2023
Indonesians were the most numerous visitors to Singapore in April. They numbered no less than 220,067, compared with 171,507 in March. Next came Malaysians (98,190) and Indians (97,029). Australians came in 4th with 92,937 visitors. In 5th place came the Chinese, with 90,725 visitors. This represents a significant increase on the 60,888 arrivals from China recorded in March 2023.
In a recent note, Maybank analyst Samuel Yin Shao Yang noted that Chinese tourism to Singapore was recovering faster than that of other countries belonging to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
This is due to strong demand and the greater seating capacity available on aircraft.
In passing, he also estimated that the number of available seats should reach 65% of pre-international health crisis levels by the middle of this year. By way of comparison, he believes that the number of seats between China and Thailand or Malaysia should be around 45% of pre-Covid levels by the same time.
Singapore’s 2 hotel-casinos
This rise in tourism in Singapore is excellent news for the city-state’s 2 hotel-casinos. They can’t rely solely on the local population to operate properly. They therefore need the arrival of many foreigners.
For the record, the American Las Vegas Sands group operates the Marina Bay Sands in the historic center. Meanwhile, Malaysian conglomerate Genting operates the Resorts World Sentosa on Sentosa Island, which has established itself as a popular seaside resort.
