Scammers use fake tokens at Galaxy Macau
Just a few days ago, Macau’s judicial police arrested 2 Chinese nationals on suspicion of using fake casino chips at the Galaxy Macau hotel-casino.
At least 6 other individuals are still being sought in connection with this case. All are believed to have taken part in the same scam, which took place on Monday August 21.
It is said to have cost Galaxy Entertainment Group’s Galaxy Macau no less than HK$5.6 million, which is roughly €662,000.

In total, at least 493 fake tokens worth HK$10,000 (around €1,180) were used by the group of crooks for around 2 hours, as part of the scam that interests us in today’s news.
At least, that’s what the Macau Judicial Police just announced at a press conference held on Wednesday August 23.
It has also been learned that no fewer than 804 additional fake chips may have been used in the case.
Unfortunately, no explanation has been given as to how this figure was arrived at.

Poor-quality fake chips without electronic identification technology
It would appear that the fake chips used in this scam at Galaxy Macau were of rather poor quality. Indeed, it was a scrupulous and attentive croupier who discovered the deception.
When he got his hands on one of them, he realized that its surface was slightly rough. Further inspection revealed that it had no electronic identification technology.
Nowadays, casino chips are always fitted with RFID chips to make them even more difficult to counterfeit. This is because they emit signals which are picked up by specially-designed equipment at traditional gaming tables and casino cash desks.
The scammers were well aware that the poor quality of their fake chips would enable them to be identified fairly quickly. Consequently, they tried to exchange them as quickly as possible before the scam was finally discovered.
Accomplices who had to leave Macau quickly
The 2 Chinese nationals arrested are unemployed. During their arrest, the Macao Judicial Police found on their person no less than 182 counterfeit tokens and 19 genuine tokens.
Investigators believe that the other members of the group of crooks had to flee the casino immediately, when their accomplices were arrested. After disposing of over 100 fake tokens, which were found in a waste incineration center, all indications are that they used the Border Gate checkpoint to leave Macau.
