The tournament platform Repeat.gg has now been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
While Sony multiplies here and there the acquisitions of studios (Bungie, Haven…), the Japanese company is not without making a parallel movement in the field of esport. Indeed, it is quite active in this field, as shown by its actions or statements. In March 2021, for example, it became a co-owner of the EVO, the fighting game competition. And then, just recently the firm said it wanted to be a major player in PC Gaming and, by extension, in the eSports scene.
Sony acquires Repeat.gg
Now, it continues to progress in this category by acquiring Repeat.gga platform that organizes tournaments (of titles such as League of Legends, Fortnite or Warzone) on a certain principle: tll players who take part have their results saved in a database and do not have to be present at the same time to compete.
The importance of the platform, which has just been acquired by PlayStation, is no small matter, since it has so far organized no less than 100,000 tournaments and hosted about 2.3 million players. A major new acquisition that will fully serve the ambitions of Sony, as Steven Roberts (the vice president of competitive gaming at Sony Interactive Entertainment) states :
At PlayStation, our vision for esports has always been to break down the barriers for players to compete at all levels.Together with the talented team at Repeat.gg, we’re excited to explore new ways for players to engage in competitive play and expand our esports offerings. This is just the beginning of our journey and we look forward to sharing more updates with our community in the future
For all that – and this is actually what Roberts is hinting at – by going under the Japanese company’s flag, Repeat.gg has every intention of continuing to remain independent and therefore will not exclusively serve Sony’s machines. The platform sees more, in this new collaboration, an opportunity to develop and improve. This is at least what the marketing manager of Repeat.gg, Jeff Shull, seems to say:
We will have access to more resources, game titles, and technology, which will allow us to expand the team to push Repeat in directions we never thought possible. This will allow us to significantly expand Repeat over the next two years with many new features, continuing our mission to become synonymous with esports by creating a home where everyone has a chance to compete and win…
