Loto-Québec: A computer expert embezzles funds from Espace Jeux
In the Canadian province of Quebec, the games are operated by the state-owned company Loto-Quebec. Recently, one of its former computer scientists found himself in court.
He was suspected of embezzling funds from online player accounts on the site Espace Jeux.
At the end of his trial, he was found guilty.
That’s why he was just given a suspended sentence.
22,000 Canadian dollars embezzled from 30 player accounts
On Tuesday, January 24, a man named Martin Raymond went to the Saint-Jerome courthouse to hear the verdict of his trial. After pleading guilty to fraud, breach of trust and fraudulent use of computer services in November 2022, he was convicted by the courts.
The facts of which he is accused date back to the period between February and March 2020, when this computer specialist was still working at the Loto-Québec online gaming call center. He allegedly embezzled approximately 22,000 Canadian dollars (which represents approximately €15,169) from some thirty player accounts.
In order to avoid detection as much as possible, he only targeted accounts that had been inactive for a very long time. Nevertheless, his dishonest actions were eventually detected by Loto-Québec’s internal security department.
Little by little, the latter managed to identify certain irregularities, through various control and verification procedures, which allowed it to trace Martin Raymond’s computer.
An investigation conducted by the Quebec anti-corruption and financial crimes unit
Of course, the police were immediately contacted, following the findings of Loto-Québec’s internal security service. It was the Quebec anti-corruption and financial crimes unit, also known as UPAC, that was in charge of the investigation.
The investigation led to a search of the home of the suspected computer expert who then suddenly stopped his criminal activities.
His employment with Loto-Québec ended in May 2020, only a few months after he was hired. He was arrested the following August.
A one-year suspended prison sentence
Created in 1969 in order to establish a public lottery in the beautiful province, the state-owned company Loto-Québec has gradually diversified its activities. Thus, it currently manages 4 land-based establishments: the Casino de Montréal, the Casino de Charlevoix, the Casino du Lac-Leamy and the Casino de Mont-Tremblant. Since 2010, it also offers online gaming through its Espace Jeux platform.
It is thanks to this platform that Martin Raymond embezzled 22,000 Canadian dollars, which has just led him to be sentenced to one year in prison with a suspended sentence.
In a recent press release, Loto-Quebec was keen to point out that the actions of its former computer specialist had no impact on customers and that the integrity of the games was never called into question.
