Osaka’s future hotel-casino may harm Macau
According to a great many gaming industry analysts, the development of a hotel-casino in Japan is likely to have a negative impact on the various similar establishments located in Macau or other areas in the Far East of the Asian continent.
Indeed, the Japanese archipelago can count on its very strong tourist appeal, which should enable it to attract and retain a good number of players.
Newly licensed hotel-casino in Osaka to boost industry worldwide
On Friday, April 14, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced that the government had finally approved the development of a hotel-casino on the artificial island Yumeshima in Osaka Bay.
The land-based casino, budgeted at about $9 billion, is being carried by a consortium jointly led by U.S. operator MGM Resorts International and Japanese financial services group Orix Corporation.
For Ryan Hong-Wai Ho (a lecturer at the Center for Gaming and Tourism Studies at Macau Polytechnic University), this future complex will have a positive effect on the overall growth of the land-based casino sector internationally.
This is because the country should eventually establish itself as one of the world’s leading markets in this field. For this, it can count on Japanese and Korean players, among others, who currently do not have casinos to welcome them at home.
Osaka: a top destination that may compete with Macau
According to many experts, the future Osaka hotel-casino may nevertheless harm the gaming industry in nearby countries located in the far east of the Asian continent. This is the point of view of the President of the Macau Gaming Professional Association (U Io Hung) for example.
Indeed, he believes that the city of Osaka is already a tourist destination of choice for many Asian tourists, including those from mainland China. When a hotel-casino is finally available to accommodate the players, its appeal will become even greater.
It should then represent a serious competitor to Macau, especially since it offers an entry point to Japan, which contains major cultural and tourist resources.
Moreover, Osaka airport offers more connections than Macao.
Dealers in Macau who need to prepare by the time the Osaka casino opens in 2029
At present, Macau’s casinos remain far too dependent on players from the Chinese world, i.e. mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
In order to grow, they will have to redouble their efforts to attract foreign tourists, otherwise the impact of the future Osaka hotel-casino may be even more direct.
In passing, U Io Hung also notes that taxation is much more interesting in Japan. Indeed, the tax rate should be less than 30% in Osaka. By comparison, it is about 40% of the gross gaming revenue in Macau.
Fortunately, operators have time to prepare for this new competition. The Osaka hotel-casino is not expected to open until 2029.
