The owl brand is not dead. Although the name has not been associated with a game for over 20 years, Sony retains and renews the rights to use the logo.
A few days before the sad death of Ian Hetherington, the founder of Psygnosis, Sony had refiled the owl logo in the trademark register. Don’t look for a bad cause and effect joke, there is obviously none.
According to the eagle eyes of some netizens, the company has indeed reapplied for the rights to the image of the logo before the United States Trademark Office, for another 10 years, Sony having registered for the first time the logo in January 2012.
If some see it as a possible desire to relaunch the brand that disappeared in 1999 when the studio was incorporated into SCEE to become SCE Studio Liverpool, it is not uncommon for companies to secure rights that are no longer used, but just to avoid malicious use. The previous takeover, in 2012, had also been carried out the year when SCE Liverpool/Psygnosis was dismantled.
After research, the name Psygnosis, meanwhile, is owned by Sony Japan until 2023, and in Europe by SIE until 2027…
A trademark of Psygnosis logo has been registered and renewed December 1, 2021 on US
Well known for Amiga titles like Lemmings, and WipeOut, Lula World, G-Police on PlayStation as SCE Studio Liverpool (now XDEV) after the acquisition by Sony in 1993
